Nutritional Supplements for Meniere’s Disease – Do they help?

Various nutritional supplements used to help reduce the symptoms of Meniere's disease

The use of Nutritional Supplements for Meniere’s disease is something that has been used for decades to help sufferers live a normal life. The reason it can help is simple.

Supplementation is exactly what it says. When you use nutritional products made of highly concentrated food extracts, you are supplementing your diet; adding extra or filling in the gaps where the food you consume may be lacking.  If the immune system is given the adequate amount of nutrients through diet and supplementation, it has more chance to be strong enough to deal with the inflammation that results in the symptoms of Meniere’s.

It is not a cure, nor a treatment. Using nutritional supplements helps the body function as it should. In a perfect world we would get sufficient nutrition from diet, exercise and sunshine for the immune system to cope. The reasons we may have to supplement are covered at length in The Need for Balance Dealing with the Cause of Meniere’s disease.

At the time of the video below being posted (2007), everyone connected to Meniere’s Help had lived with Meniere’s personally and been lucky enough to rid themselves of the symptoms using high quality dietary supplements and adjusting their lifestyles.

However, in the years that followed this video  I myself and many, many more that I know of alone were able to identify and deal with our individual root causes. Our understanding has evolved a great deal.

And this is something that I have tried to focus on for readers of Meniere’s Help ever since; how to identify your individual root causes, whatever they may be and what to do about them.

The video below was originally recorded in 2006 and a LOT has changed since then.

We have come a very long way in the years since. We now know without a shadow of a doubt that nobody (possibly excluding post invasive or destructive surgery) should have to constantly suffer with the symptoms of dizziness, brain fog, vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss. It is a matter of educating yourself and taking the appropriate action in your case.

Nutritional Supplements for Meniere’s Disease – video

This video From 2006

Below I talk about my experience with Meniere’s Disease and using supplements. If you are hard of hearing or just don’t fancy the idea of looking at my ugly mug for more than a few minutes, there is a transcript below.

Video transcript

Hi everybody, My name’s Mike and I’ve lived with Meniere’s Disease for over 13 years. For the first 7 years of that, you’ll know if you’ve got Meniere’s, was “Hell”.

For the last 6 years I’ve been symptom free, and, there is a very good reason for that. You see until that time, I think I’d tried virtually everything possible.

I’d tried all the medicines and therapies, and I’d even tried very expensive surgery, which was totally unsuccessful.

Basically nothing worked. And, (coughs) excuse me, I’m not used to talking into a camera, so you’ll have to excuse my mannerism, anyway around June 2002, despite the fact that I was extremely skeptical, I tried this nutritional program and basically it changed my life!

What you’ve got to understand is we’re talking about vitamins here, vitamin supplements, and until then, I had absolutely no interest or desire, or certainly no belief in the benefits of nutritional or vitamin supplements. I thought they were utter, a complete and utter waste of time and money.

And to be honest with you I still think a lot of them are but the ones I did take, they did it for me.

So, you know, I didn’t trust this idea one little bit at the time. But if you’ve got Meniere’s yourself you’ll know just how desperate you can get and you’ll basically try anything when you get to that point but you know the way I looked at it, I felt I’d tried everything and this was just a last resort.

I thought I had nothing else to lose except a little bit more money, which I didn’t really feel like losing at the time to be honest with you.

So you know I went into this with really no confidence, no belief that it would actually work, but just tried it anyway and, thankfully it worked, you know, simple as that, it worked got rid of all the symptoms.

I mean it took time but I really could feel, even at the beginning, when I had my ups and downs, I could really feel I was on the mend.

The vertigo attacks became much shorter, and eventually disappeared altogether. The other symptoms, well like, the fact that you’re always tired, the constant dizziness gone, just gone and that was in a few days to be honest with you.

Suddenly I had this huge amount of energy. I mean any energy would have been nice. You know, after going so long with no energy and being so tired and depressed about it all any energy would have been great.

But suddenly I had bags of it, it was fantastic and the pressure in my left ear and all down the side of my face that was all, just gone, fantastic! And the brain fog, the fact that I couldn’t concentrate, suddenly I could basically.

I had my life back basically, that’s the point. I went from being as low as I possibly could, to basically being very very energetic and I had my life back. That’s what we all want isn’t it? We want our life back.

Well, about 2 years after I started these supplements I decided to join this support group, that had actually advised me, or recommended these supplements to me in the first place. And they actually do a lot more than that.

But you know I decided to join them and help them out and since then I’ve learned so much. I mean firstly there are a lot of other things you can do to help yourselves and it’s not as hopeless as you think. There really are a lot of things you can do.

And secondly I’ve seen so many other people get their lives back just like me and you know a good number of those people were just as skeptical as I was.

It’s fantastic to see these people go from as low as we are when we’ve got Meniere’s and to get rid of all their symptoms and get their life back. You know the feedback we get is fantastic and it makes you feel it’s worthwhile trying. [to help support people with Meniere’s Disease]

Well okay, what’s the point of this video, well, the problem is, the only shame of it all, and it’s a massive shame really is that the vast majority of people who hear about these supplements we take, they don’t try it!

You know I guess their skepticism gets the better of them, and understandably so. I mean it took me 18 months to actually try it and then I only tried it because I was so desperate.

So you know, these people probably don’t want to spend the money on supplements, they just never try it. And it’s a real shame because they are missing a chance of possibly getting rid of this..(Meniere’s Disease symptoms)

So anyway, if you’d like to get the information on the kinds of things we use, and lots of other helpful information, just go to the website below (Menieres-Help.Com) and I’ll see you there. You take care of yourselves.

Wow, I must have just missed you….I just logged in. Thanks for the kind words. It isn’t a cure ๐Ÿ™‚ It is just that by getting your body healthy and rebuilding your immune system, your body is able to deal with the problems in your ear and Meniere’s Disease much more effectively.

I know it is tempting to relax and take it for granted but even so, stay vigilant about your diet and lifestyle. Thanks for the comment again………

I also use the supplements recommended at menieres-help.com . I had trouble at first where the symptoms got worse for a few days, then gradually got better and better. Now I live a normal life and don’t worry about meniere’s at all. Karin and Mike were a great help, always supporting me when I doubted the power of this. I would recommend anyone who has menieres to try this. It feels like a miracle. Mike I know you won’t thank me for that last comment I am sure, as I know you are very wary of over hyping the supplements and scaring people off, but really they saved my life. Keep up the good work and thanks for the great videos on the new ‘inspiration’ page. Certainly puts things in perspective!!!!!!!!!

I started to use the supplements, as recommended by MenieresHelp.com after considerable thought, owing to their high cost. There is no doubt that the supplements are of good quality and support your immune system – I never got a cold whilst taking them. However, after using them I had no improvement. In short, it is certainly possible that they have helped people and there is considerable anecodotal coverage in that regard, so do make your own decision. However, they did not help me, though I’m glad I tried them.

Hi Simon, I think I remember you……though I have corresponded with a lot of Simons over the past few years about Meniere’s disease. I am sorry the supplements were not successful in your case. I hope you have found another avenue and had success!!…….Due to the idiopathic nature of Meniere’s disease, there can not be one size fits all remedy. What works for some might not work for others. The supplements do work for the vast majority who try them and stay in touch with us. It is important that you tackle it from all sides though also I think, taking care of your diet especially, and lifestyle. Not saying that wasn’t the case with Simon of course, but people need to give themselves every chance.

Why dont you put the list of supplements accessible to anyone ? We go to a page, buy this exact formula etc.. where nothing is explained. Just an order form, sorry its a bit disappointing and looks like you just want to take advantage to sell something.

Hi Nicolas,

Thanks for the comment and i understand your feeling. I can list the supplements in a generic way but not the actual supplements we use because the manufacturers will not allow it. Breaks copyright laws and they don’t want to be seen as saying they can ‘cure’ anything. They make supplements as preventative, meaning keep you healthy so no problem occur.

That’s the reason I can not publically say the exact supplements (brand) we are all using……but if you email us, there iis nothing stopping us telling you privately in an email ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi,

I have a quick question about the supplements which I have just received and have started taking. They have turned my urine a very very bright yellow. Is this normal and is it harmful in any way. I could do without adding to my problems at the moment ha ha. I am looking forward to seeing the results.

Thanks

Hi Kate,

Good question and something I remember noticing at first. The bright yellow is the beta carotene (pro-vitamin A) that body has not used and is being ectreted. You will notice that when you feel under the weather or have a cold or something (which shouldn’t be very often when you are on the supplements and eating well) your urine will be less bright because your body is utilizing the beta carotene to make vitamin A in your body.

Very safe way to ingest vitamin A because the body only uses what it needs…no danger of overload ๐Ÿ™‚

I have reluctantly ordered my first lot of vitamins. I am a single mother and work full time also and I do not have a lot of money….so I am really hoping they work for me. But the way I look at it is, if I have to spend all my savings to keep me healthy and working then so be it. Here’s hoping…fingers crossed.

Keep us posted Angela and we will hold your hand so to speak as you go along ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Bradley,

We have just emailed you information on the supplements we use. But just as a side note we do not see this as a “treatment” for menieres disease.

The supplements we use are very powerful and do a lot to support the body’s immune system. With a healthier immune system our bodies are able to deal with inflammation within our ears much better. As a result of the inflammation being controlled naturally we are able to live symptom free.

All the best Bradley and good luck. Mail us anytime you like with worries or concerns and keep us updated on your progress .

Hello, I am in roughly my 7th year of menieres.. It for the first four years come for a couple days then stop. in 2008, i met, married an australian lady and moved to sydney,, this is when it started full on, and since has not stopped. I saw several doctors there who came up with nothing then to an ent specializing in menieres. he suggested a low sodium diet but nothing of vitamins or supplements. The marriage ended and i returned to USA, I am desperate, have tried eating low sodium diet, gave up alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine,, I quit my job when I found there was an infestation of black mold. Since quitting work, some improvement, but stress is getting the better of me now. Are these vitamins and supplements different than what I can buy over the counter at a pharmacy? The only relief I do get is from Xanax, which he would not prescribe in Sydney. I appreciate any help, and would like a listing of supplements that have been found helpful.
Thanks in advance,

Hello again,, I should have mentioned, my symptoms,, my worst is heavy pressure in left ear (before last 3 years was my right), tinnitus, which I have gotten used to for most part, dizziness, severe brain fog, lethargy is an understatement, and pretty major depression. My ent here says I have tmj, which may be, but won’t address or diagnose it as menieres. I get shots of steroid into my jaw, with no relief from the pressure in my left ear. I have given up everything I have heard of as “triggers” and am at the end of my rope here. Thank you again, W Boeppler

I bought a multivitamin capsules from a chiropractor great nutrients in it, plus taking b6, niacinimide, lipoflavanoids, vitamin c with bioflavanoids , vitamin d , omega fish oil, and just bought gingko today. My question is how much gingko shd I be taking as well as other vitamins. I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago, have been out of work because too off balance to function but going back tommrw . I feel better then I did 4 weeks ago but just started vitamins 2 weeks ago. Does this take awhile to heal? Some are saying just take supplements but don’t worry about salt intake. Please advise on proper vitamin intake . Thankyou sandi. And also how much sodium intake is the rule of thumb

Hi Sandy,

How are you doing on the supplements you bought? Are they stopping the symptoms of your Meniere’s ? How much you take depends on the supplements (brands etc) you are using. We are sending information on the supplements we all take but would love to hear from you if you have success with any others. Go to the main website for information on doctor’s advice on exact mgs of salt to take but personally I never counted the mgs as we are all different in size and amount of physical activity. I just ate sensibly, avoiding too much junk food (which is full of sodium) and never adding salt to my meals.

Hi William, Actually we hear of many people who have TMJ as a CAUSE of their menieres disease symptoms. If your ENT is saying this, he is progressive and open minded and you should be thankful. So may people contact use who are just fobbed off with the same old drugs and told to learn to live with it. I would definitely investigate this if I were you. You can keep the symptoms at bay with the supplements because they give your body the kind of support your immune system needs to deal with all the extra inflammation but if you can pi point your cause, and do something about it then you are in a much better position than most. Remember, Meniere’ds disease or syndrome, call it what you will is not a disease. It is an idiopathic condition: a set of symptoms that the doctors can not find the origin of. Once they find the origin, be it spinal, jaw, viral, auto-immune or whatever then it is no longer “Meniere’s”

I have been living with Meniere’s for four years only having bad attacks once every 4 months or so. I considered myself very lucky for that. Living in Virginia we have had a lot of rain and different weather pressures. My Meniere’s has been horrible. I know it is progressive but also I know it can go into remission. I am having 2-3 attacks a week and it is unbearable. I can not help thinking that my trigger might be weather and humidity changes in our area. I am on all the medications and looking for help. Can you please send me a list of the supplements you take Mike. This is really disabling my life as anyone with this awful conditions knows. As a single mom I can not afford to call out of work much. This is changing my whole life and my families life. Thank you so much for getting this information out to all of us who are suffering. Blessings to all of you who suffer from this. Teressa
