Malcolm, a high profile business leadership adviser from the UK……

9/19/09

I am doing well, feeling better and stronger generally. I am taking my tablets, staying off wine and bitter, if I do drink, I drink a good lager.
I have cut right back on salt, but still indulge in coffee. I feel least good when I am walking for some reason with my head fuzzy and I find it difficult to go in a straight line!

 Mar 28

I have been great for a couple of years now but have had a set back over the last few months.
I was worried about keeping on taking the supplements constantly so given that I felt ok i let things slide
and stopped taking the tablets. Needless to say within a week or so I had bad dizziness and hopeless hearing in my left
ear and I was back on the phone for more supplies and have been back on the pills for four weeks now.
I would say I am still a long way short of where i was before I stopped taking the pills. So, any more ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Malcolm Hewitt

Hi Michael,

Now into my fourth month of taking the supplements. Feeling great. Lots of energy, no dizzy spells and a clear head. Still have the tinnitus and poor hearing in my right ear but these are very definitely at livable levels. Am also finding that I don’t need to be quite so careful with the salt intake. Of course, I am careful most of the time but if I have a meal out for example I don’t notice it. I can also enjoy a glass of wine now!

Here’s a funny thing: I normally eat mostly a vegetarian diet as my partner is vegetarian but lately I’ve been really craving meat and fish.

Many thanks

Lizzie

Supplements for Meniere’s Disease – Case Study

Supplements for Meniere’s Disease – case study

Jonas from Belgium has agreed to communicate for a case study using supplements to try and bring his Meniere’s Disease symptoms under control.

I asked him because he lives in Belgium and can not get hold of the exact same supplements used in the US, UK and other English speaking countries. There are many people who can not get access to the same supplements for one reason or another, be it they are in different country or they can’t afford it perhaps, so we want to help find alternatives for those people.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply!

I showed your site to a friend who studies alternative medicine, and he provided me with these products: MarinEPA (gold + vitamine D, supercritical Omega-3 supplements) from Minami Nutrition, a bottle of Ginkgo Biloba from Phyto Reform, and Multivitamins from OrtoPhyt.

If there’s anything missing, or if I should add anything, please let me know.

I’ve only been diagnosed six months ago, and for now, the symptoms are relatively mild: I suffer from tinnitus and low-frequency hearing loss, but not vertigo. However, since I’m a professional musician and filmmaker, I find this illness very distressing.

I’m really glad I found your site, since very little people in the medical world seem up to date about Menière’s.
Which reminds me: I’m also taking Betahistine (I think it’s called BetaSerc in the States) but am already lowering my dose,
since it doesn’t seem to do much for me. I hope this medicine doesn’t interfere with the products you recommend?

All the Best from Belgium,
Jonas Govaerts

HI Jonas,

We use a Ginkgo which is important, a broad spectrum optimized multivitamin/mineral,
GRAPE SEED EXTRACT (is the main ingredient that helps inflammation….allegedly).

The Omega oils are a good addition because the Dr who originally put the program together added that a few years ago.

As you know the supplements will be available in Belgium soon but I am always looking for alternatives (cheaper) for people.
Would you mind if I followed your progress and put it as a case study on the blog to help others in your position?

I know its a lot to ask but it would help others

Hi Mike,

I don’t mind at all, I’ll keep you updated about my progress and you can ask me anything you want.

I’m also a member of the  group Youngsters With Menière’s, they’ve been a great help.
There’s so much misinformation on the net about the disease it’s always good to come in contact with people who know what their talking about and/or have lived through what I’m experiencing.

Just to be clear: do I still need to get the grape seed extract, or is that included in the Multivitamins?

Take Care,
Jonas

Jonas Govaerts to me

Hi Mike,

Just to give you the whole picture: I’m also trying acupuncture, and have recently received a steroid injection in my left eardrum.
I’ve experienced less pressure and tinnitus since then, but the hearing loss seems the same.
They’re doing a new audiogram next week, I’ll let you know if anything has changed.

I know of only two supplement stores in Antwerp, where I live, so please let me know if the new shop opens!

All Best,
Jonas

Thanks so much for your help Jonas. I am sure a lot of people will appreciate it 🙂

You will most probably have to get the grape seed extract separately, but check the labels for the ingredients….you never know.
And thanks for the advice about the group ‘Youngsters with Menière’s,’

Hope the first update is a positive one

Okay, I’ll try to track it down!

Like I said, I’m ‘only’ suffering from hearing loss and tinnitus at the moment, but I understand the vertigo is a far worse symptom.
Hope I never have to experience it, but you never know with this unpredictable disease…

All Best,
Jonas

Nutritional Supplements for Meniere’s disease

Nutritional Supplements for Meniere’s Disease – Do they help?

The use of Nutritional Supplements for Meniere’s disease is something that has been used for decades to help sufferers live a normal life. The reason it can help is simple.

Supplementation is exactly what it says. When you use nutritional products made of highly concentrated food extracts, you are supplementing your diet; adding extra or filling in the gaps where the food you consume may be lacking.  If the immune system is given the adequate amount of nutrients through diet and supplementation, it has more chance to be strong enough to deal with the inflammation that results in the symptoms of Meniere’s.

It is not a cure, nor a treatment. Using nutritional supplements helps the body function as it should. In a perfect world we would get sufficient nutrition from diet, exercise and sunshine for the immune system to cope. The reasons we may have to supplement are covered at length in The Need for Balance Dealing with the Cause of Meniere’s disease.

At the time of the video below being posted (2007), everyone connected to Meniere’s Help had lived with Meniere’s personally and been lucky enough to rid themselves of the symptoms using high quality dietary supplements and adjusting their lifestyles.

However, in the years that followed this video  I myself and many, many more that I know of alone were able to identify and deal with our individual root causes. Our understanding has evolved a great deal.

And this is something that I have tried to focus on for readers of Meniere’s Help ever since; how to identify your individual root causes, whatever they may be and what to do about them.

The video below was originally recorded in 2006 and a LOT has changed since then.

We have come a very long way in the years since. We now know without a shadow of a doubt that nobody (possibly excluding post invasive or destructive surgery) should have to constantly suffer with the symptoms of dizziness, brain fog, vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss. It is a matter of educating yourself and taking the appropriate action in your case.

Nutritional Supplements for Meniere’s Disease – video

This video From 2006

Below I talk about my experience with Meniere’s Disease and using supplements. If you are hard of hearing or just don’t fancy the idea of looking at my ugly mug for more than a few minutes, there is a transcript below.

Video transcript

Hi everybody, My name’s Mike and I’ve lived with Meniere’s Disease for over 13 years. For the first 7 years of that, you’ll know if you’ve got Meniere’s, was “Hell”.

For the last 6 years I’ve been symptom free, and, there is a very good reason for that. You see until that time, I think I’d tried virtually everything possible.

I’d tried all the medicines and therapies, and I’d even tried very expensive surgery, which was totally unsuccessful.

Basically nothing worked. And, (coughs) excuse me, I’m not used to talking into a camera, so you’ll have to excuse my mannerism, anyway around June 2002, despite the fact that I was extremely skeptical, I tried this nutritional program and basically it changed my life!

What you’ve got to understand is we’re talking about vitamins here, vitamin supplements, and until then, I had absolutely no interest or desire, or certainly no belief in the benefits of nutritional or vitamin supplements. I thought they were utter, a complete and utter waste of time and money.

And to be honest with you I still think a lot of them are but the ones I did take, they did it for me.

So, you know, I didn’t trust this idea one little bit at the time. But if you’ve got Meniere’s yourself you’ll know just how desperate you can get and you’ll basically try anything when you get to that point but you know the way I looked at it, I felt I’d tried everything and this was just a last resort.

I thought I had nothing else to lose except a little bit more money, which I didn’t really feel like losing at the time to be honest with you.

So you know I went into this with really no confidence, no belief that it would actually work, but just tried it anyway and, thankfully it worked, you know, simple as that, it worked got rid of all the symptoms.

I mean it took time but I really could feel, even at the beginning, when I had my ups and downs, I could really feel I was on the mend.

The vertigo attacks became much shorter, and eventually disappeared altogether. The other symptoms, well like, the fact that you’re always tired, the constant dizziness gone, just gone and that was in a few days to be honest with you.

Suddenly I had this huge amount of energy. I mean any energy would have been nice. You know, after going so long with no energy and being so tired and depressed about it all any energy would have been great.

But suddenly I had bags of it, it was fantastic and the pressure in my left ear and all down the side of my face that was all, just gone, fantastic! And the brain fog, the fact that I couldn’t concentrate, suddenly I could basically.

I had my life back basically, that’s the point. I went from being as low as I possibly could, to basically being very very energetic and I had my life back. That’s what we all want isn’t it? We want our life back.

Well, about 2 years after I started these supplements I decided to join this support group, that had actually advised me, or recommended these supplements to me in the first place. And they actually do a lot more than that.

But you know I decided to join them and help them out and since then I’ve learned so much. I mean firstly there are a lot of other things you can do to help yourselves and it’s not as hopeless as you think. There really are a lot of things you can do.

And secondly I’ve seen so many other people get their lives back just like me and you know a good number of those people were just as skeptical as I was.

It’s fantastic to see these people go from as low as we are when we’ve got Meniere’s and to get rid of all their symptoms and get their life back. You know the feedback we get is fantastic and it makes you feel it’s worthwhile trying. [to help support people with Meniere’s Disease]

Well okay, what’s the point of this video, well, the problem is, the only shame of it all, and it’s a massive shame really is that the vast majority of people who hear about these supplements we take, they don’t try it!

You know I guess their skepticism gets the better of them, and understandably so. I mean it took me 18 months to actually try it and then I only tried it because I was so desperate.

So you know, these people probably don’t want to spend the money on supplements, they just never try it. And it’s a real shame because they are missing a chance of possibly getting rid of this..(Meniere’s Disease symptoms)

So anyway, if you’d like to get the information on the kinds of things we use, and lots of other helpful information, just go to the website below (Menieres-Help.Com) and I’ll see you there. You take care of yourselves.
